Many years ago I was astonished to learn that some speed records set in the late 1930's were never beaten - I refer in particular to those set by German record cars on roads open to traffic (the Frankfurt - Darmstadt "autobahn") in 1938-1939.
I was very strict about the scale (1/43) and the quality of the models of the German "Silver Arrows", some of which quite expensive (in the 100 Euro range). Both for the Auto Union Typ C Stromlinie and for the Mercedes cars, my small museum includes a model of the Grand Prix car from which they were derived.
While looking for the German cars, from time I took the opportunity to buy a few other land speed record vehicles, regardless their scale and accuracy - they are just a complement to the more serious part of the collection.
I set the German cars in my showcase with a background depicting the "Darmstadt Rennstrecke", while the background for the other mixed scale models are the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Molti anni fa fui sorpreso di apprendere che alcuni record di velocità stabiliti alla fine degli anni '30 non sono mai stati battuti - mi riferisco in particolare a quelli stabiliti dalle auto da record tedesche su strade aperte al traffico (la "autobahn" Francoforte - Darmstadt) nel 1938-1939.
Sono stato molto rigoroso riguardo alla scala (1/43) e alla qualità dei modelli delle "Frecce d'Argento" tedesche, alcune delle quali piuttosto costosi (nell'ordine dei 100 Euro). Sia per la Auto Union Typ C Stromlinie, sia per le auto Mercedes, il mio piccolo museo include un modello dell'auto da Gran Premio da cui sono derivate.
Mentre cercavo le auto tedesche, di tanto in tanto ho colto l'occasione per acquistare alcuni altri veicoli da record di velocità terrestre, indipendentemente dalla loro scala e precisione - sono solo un complemento alla parte più seria della collezione.
Ho sistemato le auto tedesche nella mia vetrina con uno sfondo raffigurante il "Darmstadt Rennstrecke", mentre lo sfondo per gli altri modelli in scala mista sono i Bonneville Salt Flats.
