I pride myself on being one of the leading experts of the McDonnell XF-85. Recently the Ukrainian firm "Halberd Models" issued a resin kit (with photo-etched metal details) of the Goblin. When I asked whether the kit (announced for pre-orders) was actually available, the owner Andrey Kozlov wrote me a short and respectful e-mail along the following lines: «Since we could not have designed our model without the help of your web pages about the Goblin, we hope that you will accept as a token of gratitude one free kit».
Obviously I gladly accepted but it was clear from the beginning that my poor modeling skills would have compromised the result, not to mention the fact that I never assembled a resin kit before. So I hired a professional modeler, Simon Antelmi, who did the work for me.
The quality of the kit and of the assembly and painting is exceptional, including the two miniatures from Black Dog Models. My only intervention was gluing the miniatures to their ladders, and adding a plywood base where I tried to render the 10' concrete slabs appearing in may photos of the Goblin, painted with acrylic colors. I take full responsibility for the only small blunder in the model: as I insisted to build the model with the skyhook retracted, an extensive putty work was required on the nose, where the skyhook pit cover plate fit loosely. It's just my fault having forgot to tell Simon that the seam around the retractable hook should have remained more clearly visible.
Including a custom plexiglass showcase and two miniatures, I spent around 500 Euro, and I call myself lucky because the gift kit would have costed around 150 Euros more...
The model now has the place of honor in the center shelf of my living room.

Mi picco di essere uno dei massimi esperti del McDonnell XF-85. Di recente la ditta ucraina "Halberd Models" ha rilasciato un kit in resina (con dettagli in metallo fotoincisi) del Goblin. Quando ho chiesto se il kit (annunciato per i preordini) fosse effettivamente disponibile, il proprietario Andrey Kozlov mi ha scritto una breve e rispettosa e-mail del seguente tenore: «Dato che non avremmo potuto progettare il nostro modello senza l'aiuto delle sue pagine web sul Goblin, speriamo che lei accetterà come segno di gratitudine un kit gratuito».
Ovviamente ho accettato volentieri, ma era chiaro fin dall'inizio che le mie scarse capacità di modellista avrebbero compromesso il risultato, per non parlare del fatto che non ho mai assemblato un kit in resina. Quindi ho ingaggiato un modellista professionista, Simon Antelmi, che ha fatto il lavoro per me.
La qualità del kit, dell'assemblaggio e della verniciatura è eccezionale, comprese le due miniature di Black Dog Models. Il mio unico intervento è stato incollare le miniature alle loro scale e aggiungere una base di compensato dove ho cercato di riprodurre le lastre di cemento da 10 piedi che compaiono in molte foto del Goblin, dipinte con colori acrilici. Mi assumo la piena responsabilità dell'unico piccolo errore nel modello: poiché ho insistito per costruire il modello con lo skyhook retratto, è stato necessario un ampio lavoro di stucco sul muso, dove la piastra di copertura del pozzetto dello skyhook si adattava in modo lasco. È solo colpa mia aver dimenticato di dire a Simon che la fessura attorno al gancio retrattile avrebbe dovuto rimanere più chiaramente visibile.
Includendo una vetrina in plexiglass personalizzata e due miniature, ho speso circa 500 euro e mi considero fortunato perché il kit omaggio mi sarebbe costato circa 150 euro in più...
Il modello ora ha il posto d'onore nella mensola centrale del mio soggiorno.
